Autumn at High Beeches

A walk in the woods near High Beeches in Sussex this October morning turned into an unexpected sweet chestnut gathering and mycological photographic trip.

Early October and the chestnut harvest has begun!

Leaving the piles of freshly fallen nuts closer to the car park for the squirels who were running around actively hording supplies, we went down one of the paths into the woods where more mature sweet chestnut trees were growing. Luckily I’d brought a backpack which soon had a good layer of collected nuts safe inside for roasting later.

While roaming under the trees we started to notice the fungi were fruiting well after the recent rains with several types showing through the leaf litter and on the rotting stumps.

A group of Sulphur Tuft maybe?

A group of emerging Sulphur Tuft maybe?

A more mature clump of Sulphur Tuft?

A more mature clump of another Tuft species?
